Q:What is your background in education?

A: After 13 years as a CPA in the state of California, I realized that helping children is the most honorable work I can do. I have now been a credentialed teacher of special education in Los Angeles for six years, with my masters degree in special education also. I have enjoyed working successfully with children of autism, brain damage, learning disabilities (dyslexia included), language disorders, ADHD, as well as other disabilities. Prior to obtaining my credential, I worked with children at UCLA's autism center (NPI) and several schools in the los angeles area.

Q:What has been your student's reaction to the DVD?

A:The children love the dvd, and ask me often if they can see more of the dvd again...and again.

Q:How do you feel this DVD helps kids with special needs?

A:In my personal experience, this video energizes children to learn and to explore the world. It works to develop their critical thinking skills, and helps develop their capacity for math, reasoning, and phonics, too. This is true for both typically-developing children, as well as children with special needs. It helps children think about things they may not have thought about before, and presents familiar concepts in new and fun ways.
The music in the show is particularly delightful and really keeps children engaged. As an adult, I appreciate the high quality and the high-interest production and content of the program.

Q:How have you incorporated the DVD into your classroom?

A:On different days, I've shown segments to my students to watch. We discuss what we saw, and I then follow up with what I call extension activities. Extension activities start with what they learned in the dvd, then give them additional opportunities to think and explore along the same lines, and then can be taken to higher levels from there, to maximize their learning.

Q:Would you recommend this DVD to your parents or other teachers/schools with Special Ed programs?

A:I already am recommending this dvd to teachers and parents at our school. I am also recommending it for parents with children who are preparing for kindergarten. As part of a parent education seminar, I will be showing this dvd as part of the presentation, explaining how parents can use it to help develop cognitive and/or school readiness skills in their young (3-7 years) children. In this presentation, I will also be showing them what they can do to help their children at home, as well as what materials they can buy to help extend the activities for their children.

Q:How do the DVD lessons compliment your own lessons?

A:The dvd lessons add an exciting visual component that draws children in to introduce concepts. It builds their interest and increases their understanding so that I can easily take over from there. It helps give children a multi-modal learning experience, which scientific research proves is most effective for learning in all people, both children and adults.

Q:Do you feel the combination of liveaction and computer generated visuals is effective? Why?

A:I love the combination of real people and computer animation. It helps hold interest and attention. besides that, my students get to see real children doing these activities, to give them a good picture of what they can do.

My son loves this DVD! I'm very careful about what programs I expose him to and this one meets all my criteria. If he's going to spend a half hour doing something, I want it to be enjoyable, valuable, and memorable. "Learn Along With Me" is all that. He's learning while having fun, and he can't stop singing the songs even days after watching it!

I just want to applaud your entire team on such a wonderful show. Shayna, my 3 year old has never held such attention to a DVD. She is already singing all the songs and asks for it all the time. She is even showing that she has learned things directly from the DVD. Brianna, my 6 1/2 year old is even enjoying it. Although she initially said “ this is for babies ”, I find her asking to watch sometimes more than her sister. Tonight she said to me “ Move over Caillou and Dora! Hello Amanda Acorn !” Her sister had been driving her and me for that matter crazy with the other two! This is a breath of fresh air. The kind of show you want your child to watch. The music is wonderful and we (my daughters and I,) are looking forward to more.

My son (2 ½) is starting his schooling in a few weeks and a friend recommended your tape. He can't get enough of it & is so excited to start school. He just loves Amanda & The Grumbles. WOW, what a great project. He's even tries to sing along with the “Learn Along' song. Thank you for making it! Just wonderful!

My son loves this DVD. When I ask him what he did at school he used to say “I don't remember." After he watched the Tiny Oaks DVD he began to explain the lessons to me. It was so nice to know that he was learning after all.

This is a terrific video - a real step up in entertainment for children. Not only do my kids love it, but I find myself singing the songs as I vacuum. I'm looking forward to the next one and hope there will be many more.

My child has been enjoying this particular tape for weeks now. I saw an ad for in a magazine that was in Kim's Montessori preschool. It has taken over the top place of all her other DVDs. She wants to see it many times a day, but I limit her to once a day. I don't want TV to become the center of her world. But the quality of this tape is outstanding. It rivals anything out there today, and is far superior to anything on TV. The songs are so sing-able and catchy, and the visuals are so lush, and best of all its educational and entertaining.... I honestly believe this is going to become the next big thing!

I just got this DVD which I love! My kids call it "Oak Oak" and they want to watch it all the time! My 3 year old twin girls are in Montessori school now, but I was thinking that this would be a great tool to decide if you like the Montessori teaching method.
I love it, you will not be disappointed!

My daughter loves this video! After watching it, she began to be more precise when stacking blocks, and she's sounding out words all the time! It has really jump-started her motivation to learn!

Kira really enjoyed the DVD!! It held her attention the whole time--and believe me, not all videos do. She was even repeating along with Amanda Acorn and the narrator some of the time. The graphics are BEAUTIFUL! Congratulations on a great product!!

Well, today Liam asked "Mommy" to get his favorite movie because he hasn't seen it in a few days. Andrea was thinking that it's Iron Giant, Toy Story, or something else. She asked him what movie and he said "Tiny Oaks with Amanda". So he watched that 3 times in a row. I can honestly say that he hasn't acted this way about ANY other show we have on DVD or Tivo or VHS, or whatever!

He loves it. He requests it often and it has had an impact on his schoolwork. He has renewed interest and vigor in the sensorial exercises at school and has requested to do the moveable alphabet with his teacher. On the whole, he has been making more effort of sounding out all sorts of words that he says and sees. Being only 3 and enrolled at school only since January, I would rate the video a success.

I would appreciate any information you can provide on when the next installment will be released and what exercises the video will include.

I just wanted to let you know how much we love the dvd. My children and I watched it together as soon as it came. They sat still and watched every second, they joined in and yelled out answers. They really love it. And I enjoy seeing them really into something that is educational. They like your web site as well, and can't wait for "games" to come on it. And your staff are very friendly, I enjoy working with them. I couldn't believe how helpful they are, and how fast they ship the dvd. Thank you so much for putting something like this out there for our children.

"I would like everyone to know the pleasure I have had in working with Ben and his team at Tiny Oaks regarding their new video. I showed the video to a sample group of kindergarten-aged students at my school and want to say that they can't get enough of it! Even when it is finished they ask for it again! The video is well-made and the kids respond to the familiarity of the Montessori apparatus shown in it. They love seeing the kids in the video working with the same materials they use every day in class. The kids also respond to the realism of the characters and their actions and enjoy the music. I can't wait for the next video and my students can't wait for the next time they can watch it! I highly reccomend this video to any parent of a Montessori student, to homeschoolers and to Montessori schools, themselves."

Daniela R. Fritz
Ph.D. in German language and literature and Applied Linguistics from U.C. Berkeley

Q: What is your background in education?

A: I have been an educator and teacher trainer for years. I have a Ph.D. degree in German language and literature and Applied Linguistics from UC Berkeley. I have taught language and linguistics courses and teacher-training seminars at different universities, colleges and cultural institutions and for the last three years I have worked with children in a Montessori setting.

Q: How did you become familiar with Montessori?

A: Through my education I knew a few basics about Dr. Maria Montessori and the history of her method. But I studied it more when I was asked to teach German at a Montessori School and then when my daughter started preschool there. I believe the Montessori Method brings out the best in every child it touches and values children as real individuals.

Q: What is it about Montessori that you want for your children?

A: There are so many aspects about the Montessori Method that I really like, in particular 'how' lessons are learned. For example, I believe that very valuable real-life lessons are learned through the fact that Montessori classrooms are like active communities where children are allowed to move freely, talk with each other and choose a partner to work together.

Also, I really like the idea that in Montessori classrooms children become independent through the freedom of making their own choices and learning at their own speed rather than being forced into activities someone else selected for them.

Q: What are your views on TV viewing and other programming for children?

A: In general, I believe there is way too much TV and video watching (and computer games) in our society. Mainstream media seem to finally acknowledge that this practice has caused our children to increasingly suffer from long-term physical as well as emotional problems, e.g. the recent discussion of childhood obesity or violence fostered by certain video games. As parents become increasingly vigilant of their children's TV habits, they will need to seek out enjoyable yet meaningful programming for their children that will allow children to enjoy TV and/or DVDs while not dissociating them from their own lives and communities.

Let me illustrate my point by using our own family as an example: On average, my 4 ½-year-old daughter watches about 1 to 2 hours of TV/video/computer per week. Clearly, a DVD series that entertains her AND reinforces the ideas and ideals that surround her at her Montessori school will be a much more valuable choice for us than a program that is unrelated to her own life and daily experiences.

Q: What were your expectations about the Tiny Oaks DVD?

A: Honestly, I was not sure what to expect. I was very curious as to how the DVD would promote Montessori ideas.

Q: What was your reaction to the DVD after viewing?

A: I was really pleasantly surprised. I think the DVD is outstanding. It compliments Montessori education and does so in a delightful way. The animation is terrific and the music by Richard M. Sherman is truly beautiful.

Q: What value does it have and how does it compliment Montessori?

A: To me as a parent, Tiny Oaks represents a true alternative to mainstream TV programming or other videos/DVDs. It's like bringing an imagined Montessori community into your home. Tiny Oaks allows children to identify with the main character and real-life children in the DVD and reinforces the ideas and ideals that surround children on a daily basis in their classrooms. It validates our little people's experiences when they watch the main character learning how to use Montessori materials or when they observe how real children work together in a real classroom.

Q: What makes it different from other children's programming?

A: Tiny Oaks embodies Montessori ideas and, for Montessori students, it makes their experiences relevant. Additionally, it teaches the audience delightful songs that directly relate to the different materials shown at the different stations. And contrary to many other children's programs and games, it is, of course, non-violent.

Q: What would you tell other parents about the DVD?

A: I think allowing Montessori students to watch Tiny Oaks is like bringing a natural extension of the classroom to the home. It validates their experiences in a very charming way. I would encourage parents to watch the DVD together with their children: Children can explain the materials shown at the different stations and become their parents' teachers. Therefore, watching the DVD together with their children will give parents a glimpse into Montessori classrooms and turn an hour in front the TV into a fun and educational experience for everybody.
